However, living in Delhi comes with a cautionary note – breathing is injurious to health. People are losing years of their lives, 11.9 years to be exact, simply by breathing in Delhi’s polluted air. It is equivalent to smoking more than 10 cigarettes a day.
Delhi is currently engulfed in a thick blanket of noxious haze that burns eyes and lungs, prompting calls for action. The state government is compelled to act, or at least be seen to act, due to public frenzy. However, the attempts to resolve Delhi’s pollution crisis are ineffective.
Delhi’s air quality is currently in the severe category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 423. In some places, it is well above 450. The AQI runs from 0 to 500, and anything over 300 is hazardous, while anything over 400 is extremely risky. The healthy limit is 0 to 50, so Delhi’s air quality is nearly 10 times worse than the healthy limit.
Despite the severity of the situation, the efforts to combat pollution are inadequate and delayed. The government has only taken the concrete step of shutting down schools. They have also come up with a plan for ministers to personally visit parts of the city to ensure anti-pollution measures are being implemented. However, these actions seem more like a show than a genuine effort to address the issue.
The government has also proposed banning the entry of taxis registered in other states and implementing the odd-even scheme, which is a vehicle rationing measure. However, the Supreme Court has called these measures mere optics. The government has also suggested cloud seeding, a weather modification technique, to induce artificial rains and reduce airborne pollutants. However, this plan is still awaiting a proposal and approval from the Supreme Court.
It seems like the government is scrambling to take action without proper preparation, similar to a student cramming for an annual exam. Delhi’s policies are reactive rather than proactive, aimed more at containing public backlash than truly curbing pollution. This pattern repeats every year, as pollution levels rise due to a drop in temperature, calm winds, and stubble burning in neighboring states.
